Vocabulary We Utilize
This is vocabulary we use in our "Basic Presentation" but also very freely in all our presentations
Gay : A self identified man who is attracted to other men; this is also used as an umbrella term for the LGBTQ+ community
Lesbian : A self identified woman attracted to other women
Trans* : An umbrella term that encompasses gender identities that do not align with gender assigned at birth. This can include: Transgender, Genderqueer, Two-Spirit, etc.
Queer : This term can be used as an umbrella term for the LGBTQ+ community, a gender identity, and a sexual orientation. As a gender identity queer advocates breaking the binary; similarly sexual orientation refers to an individual who is attracted to multiple genders or as an ambiguous term.
Questioning : An individual who is questioning their sexual orientation and/or gender identity.
Ally : Anyone who supports another part of the community. e.g. A lesbian who supports the bisexual community, a heterosexual who supports the trans* community
Pansexual : An individual who is attracted to others regardless of gender; attraction to all gender identities. "hearts not parts"
Bisexual : Generally used as, "An individual who is attracted to both men and women," however bisexual has now been adapted as a way to describe attraction to two (bi) gender identities.
Intersex : Intersex people are born with physical sex markers (genitals, hormones, gonads or chromosomes) that are neither clearly male nor female as determined by societal norms.
Asexual : An individual who is not sexually attracted to other individuals. This also serves as an umbrella term that encompasses many identities e.g. demisexual, aromantic
